Chapter 1: The Wizards Descendent

It had happened altogether too suddenly, in the space of a week Tomas had turned 18 and lost the only family he had, his parents. Now here he was sitting in a Lawyers office to have his parents will read to him.
The greying man of roughly fifty shuffled the papers awkwardly and said, “Will there really isn’t much to say lad. Your receiving there estate and everything that lies there in including all there assets so on so forth”
“Do I need to sign any papers,” he asked not sure what was done in situations like this
“Oh no it’s all been handled but there is one last thing,” he pressed a button on the intercom, “Miss. Stevens could you bring in the letter now please”
A voice came through the intercom, “very well sir” A few seconds later the secretary came in and handed a letter to the lawyer and left promptly shutting the doors behind her.
The lawyer turned the very old letter over in his hands and said, “You are Tomas A. Carmichael aren’t you? Born June 6th 1987?”
“I think that has already been established, yes” Tomas answered curiously
“Ah yes yes good,” said the lawyer and he passed Tomas the letter.
Tomas looked at it oddly as he held it in his hands then turning it over and seeing that it was in fact addressed to him he opened it and pulled out the letter. It read;
Dear Tomas,
I hope this letter finds you well although I know that’s unlikely considering your current situation. It is always sad to lose ones parents, I myself lost mine when I was a very young lad. My deepest condolences but know there is nothing that can be done to change things despite the power you will receive in time.
Now onto the business at hand, you will find behind the letter you are currently reading another one. It’s for the current Senor Partner of the firm a Mr. Brown I believe. It will explain everything he needs to know to him.

“You’re Mr. Brown the Senor Partner?”
“Yes that’s me” answered the lawyer
Tomas took the second piece of paper and handed it to the man saying, “This is for you then”
The lawyer took it and started reading then after a minute he scrunched it up and threw it into the waste paper basket, “you should probably continue reading this will take me a minute to find”
Tomas nodded and continued reading;
Now that’s settled I will explain a few things. I am Matthew Carmichael the Wizard and not to long ago I saw what would soon happen to Wizards. It is unfortunate that the church would play into the Enemy’s hands but it is not there fault they don’t know enough although perhaps it is there fault for refusing to listen.
Anyway this is all beside the point and you really do not want to hear the ranting of a very old man so I will get to the point. You are a Wizard Tomas or at least a potential one. I have known this for a while and have set things in motion to ensure that you can become a full fledged Wizard. Mr. Brown should nearly have found the document I left in the firm’s possession all those years ago so I will keep you no longer.
Yours truly, Matthew Carmichael the Wizard
P.S. There will be another letter waiting for you in the library when you arrive.

Tomas put down the letter and said to lawyer, “Have you found it?”
The lawyer beamed, “ah yes I have indeed” He sat down at his desk and opened the folder unsealing it, “this document is as legendary as it is old. It is said to be the first document to be entrusted with the firm and until now has never been opened, only preserved” He read the document thoroughly and after finishing it got up and offered his hand to shake. They shook hands although Tomas was not quite sure while then the Lawyer said, “Congratulations Master Carmichael you have just inherited the Carmichael Estate and all things there in including the title”
Tomas was shocked, “what do you mean?”
Mr. Brown pulled out a large book and opened it to a bookmarked page. The page showed a huge mansion with sprawling grounds and a vast forest. “The Carmichael estate is ten acres of forest and fields located in Epping Forest…”
Tomas interrupted him, “where is that exactly?” Living in Australia he had no idea where it was.
Mr. Brown answered him, “Oh yes of course. Epping Forest is located to the North East of London, about 15km from the centre. The Estate itself lies about 20km away. I only visited once and there are many locked doors that we don’t have keys for. No one has lived there since the estate was entrusted to us and the only ones who have entered have been cleaners and inspectors.
“I myself visited as an Inspector for it’s our last holding in England or was at least. We will of course pay for your ticket and other expenses to get you there after that it’s up to you. I must say though it is a lot to be given to such a young man and if you would like to have us sell it we could easily arrange it”
Tomas smiled like most lawyers he was trying to be sneaky, “thank you for the offer Mr. Brown although I will take you up on your offer to pay my way there I must decline on the whole ‘selling’ at least till I have looked it over for myself”
“Very well Master Carmichael one last question before I start the necessary paper work, would you like the press to be informed?”
Tomas asked “The press?”
“Well yes Master Carmichael with the estate you inherited a noble title. The press would like to be informed but if you like we can endeavour to keep it quiet for as long as possible”
“Please do I’d rather have a quick getaway from Australia if you know what I mean, maybe get a fresh start?” said Tomas honestly. He really didn’t have any friends and would like nothing better then to get away he had graduated from High School so there wasn’t anything holding him back from having a holiday. All in all he needed and wanted the break.
“Very well I’ll get a start on everything. I’ll have a car sent to pick you up in a week to take you there. Till then Master Carmichael good bye” said the lawyer as he offered his hand. They shook and Tomas left the office.

“Saying goodbye really wasn’t that hard,” Tomas remarked to himself as he was driven to the Carmichael estate. It was odd really he knew he wasn’t expecting a huge fanfare to see him leave but then again he did expect some to be sad he was leaving. None were they were all happy saying it would be good for him to get away and that he should take the opportunity while he could. Altogether strange he thought but he didn’t mind after awhile he did have a lot to look forward to.
As the limo pulled to a stop in front of the mansion Tomas sighed, “a new life awaits I guess”
He got out and first time saw a mansion a mansion up close and it was his, which stunned him all the more. He couldn’t see much of the grounds from where he was but what he saw was really great it was plain and simply but really nice and well kept. A large field surrounded the mansion and where it ended the forest began. The forest itself was your classic English oak tree forest, deep dark and containing more life then anyone would care to admit.
The mansion itself was something else entirely, designed in the classic Victorian style the four story building reminded him of five star hotels he’d seen.  He estimated about a hundred windows from the side he was on which meant there was at least a hundred rooms in the mansion probably more if he was any judge.
Mr. Brown from the firm was waiting for him by the door. Tomas smiled when he saw this it was like he was being followed by a rodent, “here to give me a tour Mr. Brown?”
“No Master Carmichael I’ll leave that up to you I’m here to give you the keys to the estate,” said the lawyer offering a set of keys
“That’s strange I thought you would’ve been here to get me to sell,” Tomas answered as he took the offered keys and went to the front door and unlocking the door opened it.
The inside was decorated in the same Victorian style as the outside of the house but looked well kept. The entry room in which he stood had two curved staircases in the middle of the room that met on the second floor balcony, the effect was rather well done if a bit grandiose.
“Well I shall leave you to things then. You have the keys to the estate and my number. Fell free to call me if you need anything,” and with that Mr. Brown left Tomas to his exploration
Tomas wasn’t particularly exploring the mansion in general but one place, the library specifically where another letter waited for him. It didn’t take him long to find it, it was directly opposite to the front door. He stood before the large double doors and remembered that, according to Mr. Brown, the door was locked. He smiled as he turned the door knob and found that at least for him very much unlocked.
He opened it with a flourish that he thought was necessary and was shocked to find a library with dimensions far larger then the mansion or even the entire estate, he smiled, “must be magic” In front of him he noticed that there was a large collection of reading chairs maybe fifty may be more all with there own personal reading lamps and all surrounding various coffee tables.
Taking in the vast space of the library Tomas felt like he needed to sit. He went over to one of the reading chairs and sat down and then as if for the first time noticed a small letter on the coffee table in front of him addressed to him. He opened and read;
Dear Master Tomas,
If you are not in fact Tomas you will now be spending the rest of your life as an inebriated snail.
Now that is out of way and we now know that you are in fact Tomas let me start by saying I hope this letter finds you well also that Mr. Brown has hopefully left by now I’m quite sure seeing the library would make his brain explode. This library is my life’s work it contains a copy of every magical text and commentary ever created some are even original prints fewer were written by the hands of the authors themselves. In short this library contains everything you will require to become a fully fledged Wizard.
I have placed several incantations over the library the lest of which provide for the rather large dimensions of library. The other more important one is for your protection; neither you nor anyone else who enters the library will ever be able to touch a book or text that they can not handle. This means that as you read this letter you will only have access to the most basic and simple of magical texts and books. Later as you grow in wisdom, skill and power you will gain access to the more... interesting texts. This is for your protection because the last thing you or I want is for you to pick up a book on advanced transmogrification and wind up being turned into a slug or some other animal.
Now you will probably take a look around the library and find that it is very chaotic and disorganized. To be honest it didn’t start off as my intention but later I continued it but not without first finding a way that you could track down any book you wish. I call it the Librarianum, it is in essence the index of the library split up into nine sections, one for each level of magic and the last for miscellaneous texts and more interesting books. The books are listed in order of power so by the time you can handle the last book of the section you are ready for the next section, with the exception of the miscellaneous section which I suggest only venturing into after you have gained a considerable amount of wisdom and a good nights rest. To summon the book you want simply speak clearly ‘Librarianum…’ and then the name of the book. If you want to summon the Librarianum itself simply speak ‘I Tomas Andrew Carmichael summon forth the Librarianum’ and it will appear in moments depending on how far away it is. Keep in mind though that beyond the Librarianum itself the spell will not work outside of the library so you must be very careful with the books that leave the library. Personally I suggest some sought of homing spell but I’m sure there is a cheaper and easier technological equivalent available to you.
Now that’s settled there are no doors in this mansion that you can not open pending your own personal discretion. What you do with the estate once you become a fully fledged Wizard is completely up to you but I would like to suggest one option, open it up as an Academy of Magic. You don’t have to do this but it is something to think about once you finish your training. Well goodbye for now.
Yours truly, Matthew Carmichael the Wizard

P.S. Please consider it seriously.

Tomas did want to consider it carefully but not for now all he wanted to do was start his training. “I Tomas Andrew Carmichael summon forth Librarianum” and then all of a sudden the book appeared in front of him out of thin air. He opened the book and going to the first page picked out the first book on the page, “Librarianum ‘Magic 101’”
Tomas heard a slight crash and then looking to the source of the noise saw a book sailing gently through the air towards him. The book landed gently on the coffee table in front of him and putting down the Librarianum picked up the book and read it’s cover, “Magic 101”
He opened the book and started reading. He didn’t rest his training for three years.
Ok first part of the Epilogue for Carmichael's Academy. For those interested or want to know in advance it is Fantasy.

Sorry for this first part being pretty slow but it has to start somewhere

Hope you enjoy.
